Jane L. Miller, Ph.D.
Before coming to Iowa, Dr. Miller was the founding Director of the AHC Simulation Center and the Interprofessional Education and Resource Center (IERC) at the University of Minnesota. She began her career working as a medical anthropologist, assessing the impact of culture in the US, Nigeria, and South Africa on patients' perceptions of risk in contracting HIV/AIDS. This work in infectious disease (particularly in maternal/child health) led directly to an interest in best practices in teaching and assessment, collaborative practice among diverse healthcare disciplines, and meaningful engagement with patients and communities.
Dr. Miller serves on multiple national committees and advisory boards for the Society for Simulation in Healthcare and the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. She publishes regularly on the use of simulation for healthcare education and practice, particularly as it relates to performance-based assessment and the acquisition of interprofessional team skills. Most recently, she served as principal investigator on a research project to develop and assess collaborative practice simulations in obstetric care and medical emergencies. She was voted Outstanding Educator of the Year by the Association of Standardized Patient Educators in 2016.
